Typing Speed vs Accuracy: Which Matters More?

By TypeForge  ·  January 2025  ·  5 min read

Every typing test gives you two numbers: WPM and accuracy. Most people obsess over WPM and ignore accuracy — but that's backwards. Here's why accuracy is the foundation, and how the two metrics interact.

The Real Cost of Errors

When you make a typo, you don't just lose the time to type that character — you lose the time to notice it, move your hand to Backspace, delete it, and retype it. A single error can cost 0.5–1.5 seconds depending on where it is in the word.

A typist at 80 WPM with 90% accuracy has an effective output rate of ~65 WPM after accounting for correction time. A typist at 65 WPM with 99% accuracy outputs closer to 63 WPM — nearly the same, with far less cognitive load.

Effective WPM by Accuracy

Raw WPMAccuracyApprox. Effective WPM
80 WPM85%~58 WPM
80 WPM92%~68 WPM
80 WPM97%~76 WPM
60 WPM99%~59 WPM
100 WPM99%~98 WPM

Why Speed Feels More Important (But Isn't)

Speed is visible and exciting. Accuracy errors are invisible until they compound. Most people don't realize how much time they lose to corrections because the corrections feel automatic — but they add up to minutes per hour.

The Right Order to Train

If you try to skip Phase 1, you'll build fast but sloppy habits that are very hard to unlearn. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

What TypeForge Measures

TypeForge shows you both WPM and accuracy after every test, plus a consistency score that reveals how steady your speed is across the test. Consistency is the hidden third metric — a typist who types at a steady 70 WPM is more productive than one who bursts to 90 and crashes to 40.
